Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 “Etch” Released

There are no words what i can tell you, excpet my favorite distro just got sleek and sleeker time after time. Back to early 2002 when i installed my first Debian with code name potato aka 2.2, I just impresed with the easy update and its big community.

The Debian Project has launched the Debian GNU/Linux version 4.0, codenamed etch, after 21 months of constant development. Debian GNU/Linux is a free operating system, which supports a total of eleven processor architectures and includes the GNOME, KDE, and Xfce desktop environments. It also features cryptographic software and compatibility with the FHS v2.3 and software developed for version 3.1 of the LSB. – SDA Asia

Mandrakesoft, a top European Linux player, also was chosen for deployment, training and support for the Linux strategy.

Mandrakesoft noted that the Linux distributions based on its corporate servers were developed specifically for the ministry.

ACW: Microsoft cries foul over open source bias

Kuala Lumpur: Software giant Microsoft has fired a broadside against the attempts by several Asian governments to introduce pro-OSS procurement policies.

In Malaysia, where the government openly supports open source software (OSS) and is drafting a National Open Source Policy, Microsoft has made it clear it will oppose any guidelines that institutionalise a procurement preference for the open source platform.

A senior Microsoft executive stated that a buying regulation that favoured open source software would not be a “fair fight”.

Microsoft loses Munich contract to Linux

Microsoft lost a contract for programs to run 14,000 PCs for the Munich city government to the free Linux software.

The City Council voted yesterday in a closed-door meeting 50-29 in favor of a detailed plan to switch to Linux from Microsoft’s Windows, according to the ruling Social Democratic Party.

Munich will accept bids within a few months. International Business Machines and Novell will probably fight for the orders.

Most IT Security professionals believe that Linux is more secure than Microsoft platforms, primarily because of the way in which the open-source OS is created, Microsoft however believe their OS’s are secure; the features are there, they just need switching on.

It seems that Microsoft are clutching at straws trying to convince most people of this, with the Marketing Director, Nick Barley even describing the anti-Microsoft sentiments as a “jihad against technology”, and condemming the popular view that Linux is part of the “free world’s struggle against a big monopolist run by the richest man in the world” as a “tabloid view”.

Distribusi (atau singkatnya ‘distro’) merupakan koleksi software yang dikemas bersama dalam satu atau lebih CDROM (meski distribusi yang mengunakan disket juga ada). Distribusi Linux disini termasuk sistem operasi dan software-software yang berjalan di Linux. Software didalam distribusi, sangat sedikit yang dibuat oleh vendor distribusi itu sendiri. Vendor menambahkan nilai dan mengambil keuntungan dengan cara:

Memastikan bahwa semua software bekerja ketika anda menginstallnya

Menyediakan program instalasi dan konfigurasi untuk kemudahan, namun tidak semua vendor membuat sendiri program instalasinya.

Menyediakan jasa technical support untuk distribusi yang dikeluarkannya. Secara tipikal vendor memungut bayaran.Itulah contoh-contoh hal yang dapat dilakukan vendor untuk membedakannya dengan vendor lain, karena mayoritas software dapat diperoleh secara bebas oleh siapa saja. Sehingga diantara distribusi-distribusi Linux lebih banyak persamaannya dari pada perbedaanya. Beberapa contoh distro Linux: Debian, RedHat, SUSE, Mandrake, Lindows, dll.

Linux Dibandingkan dengan Sistem Operasi Lain

Sangat sulit untuk mendapatkan perbandingan sistem operasi yang obyektif, karena orang-orang yang mengeluarkan perbandingan memiliki kepentingan masing-masing. Anda mungkin tidak akan percaya perbandingan yang dikeluarkan oleh vendor karena sebenarnya mereka harus mengarahkan anda untuk membeli produk mereka. Artikel yang muncul dalam dunia dagang sangat berbeda dengan spesifikasi yang dikeluarkan untuk produk dan teknologinya.

Ada contoh yang membandingkan antara Linux dan Windows yang dikeluarkan orang dengan obyektif, hanya memaparkan fakta dan membatasi pada aspek teknis semata. Namun juga ada yang mengeluarkan hasil perbandingan dengan emosional atau hanya berdasar kepentingan bisnis semata, contohnya pada website nya Microsoft yang mengatakan bahwa Linux berbasis pada Unix, teknologi yang telah berumur 30 tahun, yang bermaksud mencegah anda mengandalkan bisnis anda pada teknologi yang sudah berumur 30 tahun.

Kenyataanya sangat berbeda, Pengembangan Linux baru dimulia pada tahun 1991 dan Linux bukanlah Unix, Linux merupakan Teknologi yang lebih muda dari Windows. Namun sebenarnya hal ini tidak penting, karena umur sebuah sistem operasi tidak ada hubungannya dengan kehandalannya secara teknis.

Apa yang kita sebut Linx sekarang sebenarnya adalah ratusan program yang ditulis ribuan programmer di seluruh dunia. Jika anda melihat distribusi Linux dalam CDROM, anda akan menemukan bahwa sebenarnya Sistem Operasi Linux hanya sebagian kecil saja dari isi total CDROM. Banyak diantara program dalam CDROM tersebut bernaung dibawah payung GNU. Dengan alasan ini ada beberapa komunitas Linux yang merasa distribusi seharusnya lebih tepat kalo disebut “GNU” atau “GNU/Linux”.

Hal ini tidak berarti meremehkan kontribusi Linus Torvalds dan semua programmer pada proyek yang telah dibuatnya. Sungguh, sistem operasi Linux adalah central terhadap penemuan kebebasan dalam industri komputer saat ini. Namun, penting untuk tidak dilupakan kontribusi dari orang-orang GNU yang memiliki visi untuk memulai menggarap software yang free beberapa tahun lebih dahulu. Pekerjaan yang mereka lakukan untuk membuat GNU Public License (GPL) adalah kunci keberhasilan dari Open Source Software (OSS).
